THE LAYDOWN: BRONZER

What’s the difference between contour and bronzer? Where exactly should you apply bronzer on the face to achieve a natural, sunkissed look? Do I need to apply with precision, or can I use a big fluffy brush? All of your burning bronzer questions are finally answered by VIEVE founder and makeup artist Jamie Genevieve.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BRONZER & CONTOUR, AND DO I NEED TO DO BOTH?

Contour traditionally leans cooler in tone than bronzer, adding a ‘shadow’ to sculpt and define the face. In recent trends we’ve seen blush and bronzer placed strategically to lift and define the face, meaning contour doesn’t need to be as heavy as it once was. I personally use the right side of my Modern Bronzer to contour, the left to bronze and let my blush and highlight lift my face.

ARE THERE ANY RULES WHEN IT COMES TO APPLYING BRONZER?

Makeup is all about finding what makes you feel best. Tips and tricks from brands and makeup artists should give you the confidence to explore and try new things - I think it’s something that’s worth playing with to find what you love most!

WHAT’S THE BEST BRUSH FOR APPLYING BRONZER AND HOW?

Using a denser brush like our 121 Blush & Bronze brush will give you more control and pigment for a sculpted look - as someone who loves to really sculpt and define my face this is my go-to. If you’re more of the ‘all over bronze’ type, a brush like our 127 Powder & Bronze that’s large, fluffy and has a lot of movement will give you a diffused wash of bronze. I always start applying at the back of my cheekbones and use small upward circles to towards the centre of my face - using my pupil as a guide on where to stop. This ensures you won’t get a load of pigment right on the apples of your cheeks and you’re bronzing to suit your face shape.

WHERE DO I APPLY MY BLUSHER WHEN WEARING BRONZER?

Summery, bronzed skin always looks amazing with a warm blush like Sunset Blush in Sorbet, Pesca and Piazza. Apply right above your bronzer and softly up to the temples to tie the tones together and ensure a flawless blend.

CAN I USE BRONZER AS AN EYESHADOW?

Absolutely! Using your bronzer as eyeshadow is a great way to tie together your makeup look and save space in your makeup bag if you’re on the go. I also love to use my bronzer to blend out any strong eye makeup looks. The warmth in the bronzer blends and diffuses eyeshadow like a dream.

WHAT’S BEST – SHIMMER OR MATTE BRONZERS?

I love a blend of matte and shimmer which its why I developed Modern Bronzer. The stunning matte formula has a slight shimmer which is undetectable to the eye, but leaves a luminous matte finish - it glides on to skin, adds life to complexions and is perfect for sculpting the face.
